PREVIOUSLY:
The love of his life moved away and he got fired. After losing his job, he goes to a temporary labor job agency (Labor Needs). He thinks he's hit an all time low. Merely days ago he had a job that paid him over $50,000 a year. Labor Needs pays $60.00 a day after taxes.

My life is over I need to get used to this fact. All those good days are gone. I am one of the dregs of society now. I need to accept this. Like the big book of AA says, Acceptance is the Answer to all my problems…

“Workers.” The loud speaker. The room full of about fifty of us gets silent.

“Waste World.”

A lot of us get disgruntled. Their sentiments are, “I ain’t taking that.”

 “I woke up for this bull shit.”

 “They never give us worthwhile stuff.”

“We’ll take it,” my newfound friend volunteered us. 

Then he whispers, “Stick to me kid. You may learn a thing or two about life.”

“That’s two. The work order is for ten do we have anyone else for Waste World. Come and get your work ticket.”

I follow him. To the same room where I followed out the job application. She so calmly hands him the work order.

Then I follow him out to the parking lot. He drives a dented up Mercedes Benz.

“My name’s Dean Harold.”

“My name ________________.” The first thing I notice is a Nissan sedan goes down the road. That looks just like Carmelita's mom's car. I thought I was good. Damn I miss her. My heart aches. Just like it did with you.

“Don’t worry. I’m not going to kill you. Kid you alright?"

"Yea." I say with my voice cracking.

"Man, looks like you think too much. The best thing for you to do if your feeling down is to stay active and not brood. Time just leaves a person behind when they brood. Look up and realize twenty years is gone and you realize you could have done more..." 

 …and for the ride to the garbage plant; it’s a gig to be a garbage man, I listen to all of Dean's life lessons. I don't say a word.
