“This is it. I’m done with you,” Narcissus (C) 2018
excerpt from The House Of Bachuss (Chapter 1: Take Me To Church) (c) 2018
“This
is it. I’m done with you,” Narcissus father said with scorn. Narcissus just
looked around the family room of the the Better Path Hospital, aka psych ward,
at the walls. Just four white walls. So bland intentionally. Then he looked
down at the cheap plastic table between him, his father and his father’s new
wife. Narcissus was named that after his first wife’s mother. Supposedly the first thing he did was
look around when he was born. Until he found a mirror and he gazed out.
Narcissus was thinking of what guilt trip to use to manipulate his father. He
could start by blaming his mother.
“Never
thought you would give up on me Dad” he said with a scratchy voice starting to
crack into a whine.
“NOT
THIS TIME BOY!” His father paused a couple seconds. Then continued,”I HAVE
SPENT ENOUGH MONEY ON YOU TO SUPPORT THE AVERAGE FAMILY. I WIPE MY HANDS OF
YOU!”
Narcissus
started crying like a child. Altered his voice to sound even more devastated.
Then he asked, “So how much money you going to give me? I been thinking about
it. I think it would be best if you bought me a house out of state. Maybe in
Texas? Daddy I think I need at least fifty grand. And put the house near
downtown. No wait. Put it by a beach.”
Narcissus
father’s face turned beet red. He took a deep exhale. Turned and looked at his
new wife. She took out a stack of cash. Two hundred dollars in one dollar
bills. It was deceiving. She set it in the middle of the two. Narcissus wiped
away his tears. Immediately smiled, “Thank you Daddy. Now that I think about
it; a house on the Mexican border of Texas would be swell.”
His
father stood up. Turned away and took a couple steps toward the door. Then
turned around and stared at Narcissus, “Goodbye son.”
That
was a serious tone that Narcissus had never heard before. He panicked, “Wait
Daddy! What do you mean?” Then his new wife stood up. She looked at Narcissus.
He pleaded, “Talk to him for me.” She dug in her purse. Took out a bottle of
Lortab. Left it on the table. She nodded, then followed her husband out of the
room.
