Notes Byrne XIII (Busted by the police, all was doomed)
After returning from a deployment from the Balkans I had ten thousand dollars in my bank account. Sometime in July 2001, with half of that I purchased a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier.
Less than a month later,
I had taken my room mate to go on a booty call. Some chick
he met on the phone. A friend of ours from third platoon came with us. He had
another soldiers I D card that looked a lot like him. “Hello sir,” so polite to
the police. Louder than my rants of “Izzzeaghhh notttt evaghn drrrrinkkkkeen.” “I
can drive sir.” “Where’s your license ?” “Left it.” Five minutes, that seemed
like five hours, later he convinced the Virginia
Beach policemen to let us take a cab. We took a cab to get my room mate so he could
drive my car back to the hotel. There was some sort of foot race the following
day. My car would have been towed away. The whole ordeal cost me about $150.
One morning after pt, physical training, I went into my
barracks room to get some cigarettes to smoke, while we were cleaning up around
the barracks, when I saw a plane fly into the side of a building. Thought it
was just some sort of stupid movie.
Today was my big day. It was my ets (exit the service)
briefing. Had about six months left until my honorable discharge. In this
briefing I would begin the process of transitioning into the civilian world. We
were getting told about VA Home Loans when an MP came in, “Terrorists have
attacked. The base alarm will sound soon.” About five minutes later the alarm
went off. The whole company reported to our supply room. Then we were off to
the motor pool. Many of our trucks broke down on I-95 toward DC. The whole 54th,
Mortuary Affairs Company, Mortuary Affairs, was there by September 13. The first
team left that afternoon of September 11, 2001.
